Toledo Retiree Golf League
Golf League 2007
The 2007 Toledo Retiree Golf League consists of about 200 active players
aged from around 55 to 98 (most of them are in their 80s). Formed in 1971 by
golfers Larry Schmitt and George Eagan, the first ten years were sponsored
by the UAW's council of Elders under the direction of Howard Rediger.
All in all, there are about 160 retired guys guffing at the ball on any given Wednesday.
Consisting of 20 two-man teams from four separate divisions, they tee off early at eight
different courses throughout metropolitan Toledo. The year-end scramble is held at
the legendary Ottawa Park Golf Course (heralded as America's first public golf
course, and the only one that the black fighter, Joe Louis was allowed on).
