The Press
Club of Toledo
Touchstone Awards 2005
Toledo native and CBS television's
Everbody Has a Story,
Steve
Hartman, is this year's featured speaker
at the Press Club awards banquet held at the
Toledo Club. Local legendary commentator,
Gordon Ward hosts the event.
"Until I saw him alive here tonight, I thought that
Gordon Ward was dead," Steve quips upon his arrival
at the podium, causing raucous laughter and setting
the tone for a fun and festive evening.
"I'm waiting for Andy Rooney to retire..." he says
with an ironic mimic of Andy's voice and gestures,
"...or die." Steve's cute, self- deprecating
observation, "Why me, was Katie Holmes unavailable?"
soon becomes the running joke of the night.
Steve tells of life in Toledo, of caddying at the
Inverness Country Club, of a first kiss with Star Hadley,
of
working at the County Seat clothier with his pal, Don,
and of his
observations of CBS and the future of news.
"The times are going to get tougher," he opines.
Gordon Ward returns to the microphone, acknowledging
the presence in the audience of veteran newsman
Frank Venner,
exclaiming,
"He's still alive too!"
